Netflix Player source code released


The Netflix Player continues to gain in popularity. Roku has finally released the GPL code for their Netflix Player. Just today Forbes published that Roku would roll out a software update allowing it to stream from other online services. The diminutive device has no internal storage and just enough RAM to buffer the stream. Many have wondered how a Linux box is handling the DRM; this is purely a feature of the NXP PNX8935 processor being used. While waiting for the code, hackers have already popped the box open to see what's inside. We found [hokiokie7]'s photos of the internals on Roku's forum. The only really interesting thing we've seen so far is that the WiFi is on a daughter card that plugs into the USB. That should make it much easier to support other devices, if users ever manage to get into the system.

External CD-ROM turned Class A headphone amp


[Gio] sent in this slick Class A headphone amp. An old CD-ROM case was gutted to hold the goods. The design is fairly simple. Cost can be kept fairly low although the capacitors can add up if you're a fanatic about quality. If you've ever lost any of your headphone gear to sticky fingers, you know that having it blending in to the background can be a great feature.

Plants as speakers


You can make pretty much anything a speaker by vibrating it. Japanese engineer, [Keiji Koga], has been working for many years to perfect his plant based sound transmission system. The voice coil is at the bottom of the plant container and transfers sound up the stalk to the leaves. It's and interesting idea, but we can't imagine it sounds much better than vibrating a rigid surface.

PC interfaced SNES sound processor


[Silverpill] sent in this interesting Super Nintendo mod. [Raph] interfaced a SNES audio processing unit to his parallel port using a logic gate and a few resistors. The project looks like it probably died off, but the goal was to use a APU to play authentic audio from emulated games. Schematics and code to get the thing working are all available on the site.

EMS Synthi AKS teardown


Here's another bit of analog synth pr0n for you: Initially sold in 1972, the EMS Synthi AKS was a portable modular analog synthesizer with a built in keyboard and sequencer. The VCS 3 portion of the device had a unique routing matrix pegboard used to connect components together. [firegroove] has opened up his precious machine so that you can see all of the fine little bits that make it tick... and chirp.

Streaming Netflix to the Xbox 360


We were just as excited as anyone when we heard about Roku's Linux based Netflix Player, but not being ones to spend money on hardware, even $99, we'd much rather use something that's laying around that's not living up to its full potential. Lifehacker has a guide for using vmcNetflix to stream Watch Instantly movies to the Xbox 360. vmcNetflix is a Media Center plugin. When the 360 was originally released, you could only get Media Center by buying a new PC, now it's included with Vista, meaning people might actually use it.

Tube amp monitor


Sparkfun contributor [Pete] really loves tube amps, but he's a very safety-conscious guy who doesn't like being electrocuted. This is a problem, since tube amps are usually very high voltage, and a small mistake can be fatal. To deal with this voltage issue, he built a tube amp with a control system built around a 6DOF v3 controller board. The control system is there mainly in case of a failure, automatically shutting off the high voltage transformer in any such event. It has the added benefit of filtering any 60Hz noise from getting into the audio, which happened before he installed the control system.

In addition to regulating power, the controller board also monitors bias points in the output tubes and displays its diagnostics on an LCD. Aside from getting great sound from the tube amp, [Pete] made it look great too, installing colored LEDs under the tubes. We love his design: just because safety comes first it doesn't mean cool-factor can't come in a close second.

KT88 tube amplifier


Here's a classic project for the weekend. This KT88 based tube amplifier is surprisingly simple. The parts count is low, but the sound produced by the amplifier is considered quite pleasing. For the budget conscious, there are several optional tubes that can be used in place of the primary KT88.

Nintendo DrumAxe controller


We can't remember the last time a new cart or peripheral for the NES was released, but [Tony Amendolare] at ElektroKraft has just changed that. In conjunction with Nesdev.com, [Amendolare] created Super Synth Drums, a NES-compatible cartridge that turns button presses on the NES gamepad into drum sounds synthesized by the NES's sound chips. To complement his software, he created the Sonic DrumAxe, a controller that looks a bit like a potato gun and is played like a guitar.

Wii Menu 3.3 already circumvented


Well, that didn't take long. Three days after the release of the Wii Menu 3.3 update (which prevents homebrew loading on the Wii by killing a special hack), the update has been circumvented. The update targeted the ubiquitous Twilight Hack, which allows homebrew software to be loaded from the Wii's SD card slot by using a special game save. The team at HackMii were quick to disassemble, analyze, and scoff at the update, with member [bushing] quipping "we are not impressed." The team found bug exploits for new code in the the update that cause it to ignore the Twilight Hack. They have yet to release the fix to the public, but its likely that they'll do so at least as fast as they developed it.

Boxee social media center public alpha


Boxee is the latest piece of software to enter the home theater PC space. It's recently become available as a public alpha. The first build is only for OSX 10.5, but Ubuntu is coming. Built on the XBMC code base-they even hosted the XBMC developer con last weekend-it has the same goal of letting you navigate and watch/listen to all of your media from your using just a remote. There's more than just that though.

Wii upgrade breaks Twilight Hack


Nintendo's latest menu upgrade for the Wii, version 3.3, has broken the long standing Twilight Hack. In the past, you could load a hacked Twilight Princess save game to execute arbitrary code. After the upgrade, the Wii now deletes the hacked save game. The Homebrew Channel seems to have remained intact. So, if you've already added it and you upgrade, you should be fine. There's no telling how long before homebrew code will be completely locked out though.

Multiband Nixie VU meter


This VU meter project by [Daniel Naito] is a great piece of Russian electrocouture. It's made up of 14 Nixie tubes that display seven frequency bands for the two audio channels. He found this similar project, but wanted to keep the cost low by avoiding such exotic ICs. First, the two input channels are amplified and then split using seven bandpass filters covering 60, 150, 400, 1000, 2500, 6000, and 15000Hz. Then, the AC audio is converted to DC. The final stage converts the logarithmic scale to a linear output. Besides the semirare Nixie tubes, the majority of the parts are just cheap opamps and comparators. The post is an excellent read and you can see it in action in the video below.

UPDATE: Yep, it's a repost. I'm awesome like that. The True RMS Plasma Vu-meter seems to be new to us though.

Wii Fit World of Warcraft


By now you've probably seen the video of two researchers from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) navigating through maps on Google Earth by using the Wii Fit Balance Board. They've gone even further now by using the board to navigate World of Warcraft. It's obvious that the board is usable with any 3D environment. The hack is entirely software based, as the board is completely unmodified. It relays data to a laptop via Bluetooth, where the pressure data in converted to directional instructions by their custom app written in C#. No notes on the project are available on DFKI's site, but we're betting they'll release the software to the public once all the kinks are worked out.

Singing Tesla coils


The video above is ArcAttack! playing the classic "Popcorn" through their signature Tesla coils. Solid state Tesla coils (SSTC) can generate sound using what [Ed Ward] calls pulse repetition frequency (PRF) modulation. The heat generated by the plasma flame causes rapid expansion of the surrounding air and a resulting soundwave. An SSTC can be operated at just about any frequency, so you just need to build a controller to handle it. The task is made more difficult because very few electronics are stable in such an intense EM field. [Ed] constructed a small Faraday cage for his microcontroller and used optical interconnects to deliver the signals to the Tesla coils.
